"What goes around comes around. Last year when Glenn was on deployment we (I) decided to buy a house - without actually seeing it - as you do. As with most impulse purchases this one proved to be a source of great angst. I used my trusty power-of-attorney to take out the loan and got pre-approval to slap down a deposit. So far so good. Chuffed at my independence I congratulated myself on being so wonderfully organised and booked settlement for six weeks later.
Then the wheels fell off. The bank lost various bits of paper, the solicitor found problems with the contracts and the whole thing blew out. The house was a DHA property and when I phoned DHA to ask for an extension on settlement for the seventh time in as many weeks, I had to whinge about the inadequacies of the bank I was dealing with. The lovely Stella at DHA referred me to a mortgage broker by the name of Barry Judge. I rang Barry out of desperation but was not confident he would help me without the 'finders fee' brokers get from the bank - but I was prepared to totally re-finance if necessary. Barry not only advised me how to sort out the admin nightmare but made dozens of calls and faxed dozens of documents in a whirlwind 72 hours and had the whole thing settled by the end of the week. For nothing!
Several months later, when our friends decided to purchase a house in Subiaco I gladly handed on Barry's card. Our friends were equally as delighted.
Then, last night, after surviving the red-eye from Canberra I got home to find an envelope on my doorstep. When I opened it I found a $100 Myer Gift Voucher (immediately thought "Shoes!") and a note from Barry saying thanks for the referral of our friends. I can't quite believe it! I would have happily paid an invoice had he sent one but now I get new shoes instead!
